POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS
1. After surgery take the pain and antibiotic medication prescribed to you by the doctor as this will eliminate any discomfort and remaining infection in the area.
2. Do not operate a vehicle or hazardous device while taking prescribed pain medication.
3. Avoid spitting, smoking, and use of straws.
4. Remove gauze before taking medications. If still bleeding, replace with fresh gauze. Do not eat or drink with gauze packs in mouth.
5. Place ice pack over cheek for 24 to 48 hours. Moist heat to the face is recommended after 72 hours to help alleviate any swelling.
6. If heavier bleeding occurs, wet a tea bag, wrap a gauze sponge around tea bag and bite firmly on the tea bag. If heavy bleeding continues, call our office immediately.
7. A soft diet is recommended after surgery for the first 24 hours. Suggested soft diet foods include yogurt, ice cream, mashed potatoes, soft cooked vegetables, puddings and Jell-O.
8. After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm water and salt (1/4 tsp. salt to tall glass of warm water). You may brush your teeth gently being careful not to disturb the surgical area(s).
9. Sutures may dissolve between 2 to 7 days.
10. It is normal to experience some degree of swelling. However, if swelling increases after the third day of surgery, please contact our office.
If you notice any of the following symptoms please contact our office: - Increasing tenderness or swelling in the surgical area - A reaction to the medication (ie. diarrhea, vomiting, hives, itching)
- Increased bleeding and/or swelling
