Dr. Carlos Portales graduated from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, Texas in 1963. His undergraduate studies were done at Victoria College and San Marcos College. His oral surgery internship was done at Fordham Hospital in New York City, and his residency at the Veteran's Hospital also in New York City were he was fully trained in anesthesia. After his training, he served as Chief of Oral Surgery at the U.S. Army Medical Center in Okinawa. He has also served as Chief of Oral Surgery at Santa Rosa Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital in San Antonio.
He is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Southwest Society of Oral Surgery, the Texas Dental Association, and the American Dental Association.
Dr. Portales has kept abreast of advances in oral surgery through his continuing education since he started his practice in 1968 at the Nix Hospital. He then opened a second office in 1975 where he continues to practice.
